How do you legally register your marriage when having a celebrant led ceremony?

I deliver bespoke and personal wedding ceremonies across The Cotswolds, West Midlands, Warwickshire, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire and in my six years as a wedding celebrant, this is one of the questions I get asked the most! It's not as surprise as it can be quite confusing - but it doesn't have to be! The simplest, (and most cost effective) way to legally register your marriage before your wedding day is the book a Statutory Registration Of Marriage at the registry office. These appointments are sometimes called a 'two plus two' because it really is that simple, you go along the two of you, with two witnesses and complete the paperwork and that's it! These appointments are offered on specific times and days at each registry office but if you get in touch with the registrars they will be able to advise. You can choose any registry office that offers this service to sign your legal paperwork, it doesn't just have to be your local one. Once you have booked a time and date for your legal marriage registration you then need to book an appointment to give notice. This can be done up to 12 months before your legal marriage date and must be done at least 28 days before. You have to give notice at your local registry office in the district where you live.

In the video below, I'll talk you through it step by step but it really is much more simple than you think!

I hope you find this useful and as always if you have any questions please feel free to get in touch! Laura x
